“But Jesus immediately said to them: ‘Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.'” (Matthew 14:27)

There’s just so much in life to fear, isn’t there? Our lives are really quite unpredictable. Be it a health situation, financial problem, relationship problem, etc. There are literally thousands of things in our lives that can cause us fear.
The context of this text is when the disciples were in a boat by themselves, buffeted by the wind, it’s between 3-6 in the morning, and they suddenly see this figure approaching them walking on the water- a sight they certainly weren’t expecting! And…”they were terrified…and cried out in fear.”
What are you crying out in fear about? Perhaps it’s not an audible cry, but an internal one. What unpredictable thing are you facing?
Notice what Jesus does, “immediately” – He doesn’t wait, but says to them, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” It’s Jesus, it’s their Savior, they need not be afraid. And what is Jesus doing? He’s walking on the water! In other words, He’s God Himself!
In the face of literally thousands of things that can fill us with fear, hear your Savior tell you, “Take courage, It is I. Don’t be afraid.” Why don’t we need to be afraid? Jesus didn’t just walk on water, He also walked to a hill carrying a cross for you and pay for all your sins in full! Jesus doesn’t just control the forces of nature, He victoriously rose from the dead to control death and open the doors of heaven to you! Jesus has already taken care of the most important things for your eternity!
In the face of fear, look to Jesus who gives confidence and peace with His forgiveness, love, and almighty power for you!
Taking courage in Jesus, just like you,
