“‘Martha, Martha,’ the Lord answered, ‘you are worried an upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.'” (Luke 10:41-42)
“Lord, don’t you care…?” How often have those words slipped out of our mouths? Or a thought like that slipped into our heads?
That was Martha’s reaction to her sister Mary sitting at Jesus’ feet and listening to Him while she was busy with all the preparations.
“Lord, don’t you care…?” “I have this, this, and that to do and yet I have no time!” “My list of projects keeps getting bigger!” “I have so much to do yet and the summer is over half gone!” What worries you? What distracts you? What upsets you?
Mary chose what is better. Martha was doing a good thing, she was serving her Savior, but Mary chose what is… better. We can fill our day with many, many things, but Jesus says there is only one thing that’s needed: Sitting at His feet and listening. We do that when we focus on God’s Word.
And what happens? When we take time to focus ourselves on God and His Word we’re reminded of God’s everlasting love for us, that in Jesus we’re completely and totally forgiven, that right now Jesus is preparing a place for us in heaven, that Jesus guides all things for our good. And those things won’t be taken away from us!
What grace that Jesus allows us to sit at His feet and listen! And…when we do so, amazingly, we’re not worried, upset, and distracted by many things.
Finding peace sitting at Jesus’ feet and listening, just like you,
